usual update.... with an african twist.....

 change....

i don't like change when its not needed.... change is good where its needed... but if its not broke.... u know....
it seems everything is being upgraded and changed....
xanga.... facebook.... they all have new updated features....
i liked the way it was.... its why i signed up... they have become so fancy shmancy and not user friendly...

poor form...

its like when i changed my hair in africa.....
there was nothing wrong with my old hair.... yeh maybe it was getting a bit long.....
i said "why not..."

i ended up looking like i just came out of prison....

i think the locals were scared.........

i lasted only a few days like this.... it was pulling so hard on my scalp..... so painful!!

at least i went from being called jackie chan to sean paul / allen iverson.....

yo-what?!?

yo-tox...

let me just lay it out... lets not beat around the bush....
we had fleas in africa...

yes....

fleas......

i hate fleas.... i now sympathise with dogs.... i understand what its like to have the constant deep itch....
the invisible enemies... leaving red itches all over your body....

to scratch uncontrollably....

u wake up in the morning to find ur sheets dotted with tiny blood spots.... remnants of a fleas feast...

what a luxury it is... to live a place that doesnt have fleas.....

i flea powdered our bedroom once a week..... our sheets... mattress.... everything.....
we had a circle of protection around the base of our bed of white flea powder...
hehehe its looked almost cult-ish...

one of the best defenses against fleas over there is "yo-tox"
you gotta love the sound of that yeh?....

u dont even want to know what toxins are in it...

but at the end of the day.... who cares... as long as it works....

broken rice???

where can i buy broken rice... i know it exists here in australia because you can order it at viet restaurants....

i miss africa....

in africa one of the daily dishes was "fish and rice"... i dont know how else to explain.... thats literally what its called.... "marow Xurt".... fish and rice.......

its corbin (jewfish) steaks cooked with vegetables served on a bed of broken rice cooked in the stock of the fish and vegetables.....
yummo...

jewfish i hear you say? yes... they are in abundance in north africa... in fact fish are cheap and fresh.....

this is me at one of the stalls at the local fish market.....
this guy was our go-to fish guy.... he had good quality corbin at decent prices..

yes.... this is the fish market.... and no there is isnt refrigeration.... and yes its fresh... it comes in every morning.....
do you see the monster fish there on the right.... you get a couple of those coming in every day...

abundant fishing grounds..... yes......

fish and rice.. it like the bap and kimchi equivalent for africa.... everyone eats it everyday....
the cool thing is everyone has their variations on how its done depending on where youre originally from.....

generally.... if youre from further south (ie sengal.....) the fish and rice will be a red colour...
or if youre from the north (ie mauritania....) it will be white.....

either way its tasty...

you eat with your hands from the communal dish.... and you get some veges... fish.... and some rice... and you mash it up and roll it into a ball and you chuck it into your mouth.....

so good......

one of our favourite restaurants was "le fleuve" which means "the river" in french...

there was only 1 thing on the menu.....

u guessed it... fish and rice....
and it was dirt cheap... less than a dollar i think......

the food would take less than a minute to come out...

we would eat there a couple of times a week....

the shop is pretty much just one small room with 4 tables and some chairs...just imagine 4 concrete walls with a gap as an entrance.... but no door..... no windows......... it doesnt get much better than this....

here the fish and rice would be served on individual plates and u get to use a spoon (which is pretty wow... in this context....)....

here is jane enjoying her daily serving of fish and rice at le fleuve

this little dish here is pure gold.... its the crispy side left over rice bits from the pot..... the african version of "nu-long-jee".... yum yum.... u sprinkle it on ur rice and mix it in...

this little dish is equally gold... its the sauce that the fish is cooked in...

u pour it over your rice for extra flavour.....

im dying to make it here... but i dont know where i can get broken rice......
help me out my vietnamese brothers and sisters,,,,,,

here is me... with my first try at making fish and rice in africa.......
the locals we ate it with gave the thumbs up of approval.......

or it could have the thumbs up of disapproval.... you never know the contextual usage of the thumbs up in cross cultural situation...... hahhaa

not bad i reckon.... except.... i went a bit overboard with the vegetables.... hehehe.... not that it was a problem.... i loved the carrots and pumpkin....

i miss african food..... lacking in nutrition... nearly every dish begins by heating up an inch of oil in a big pot...
why does greasy food taste so good......

pizza what?!?

from a distance we saw it....
could it be??.... no way.....

it was.....
no wait a minute........

jipped.....

who cares at the end of the day it tasted great and farout pizza out in a place like that is pretty gold.....
id eat there anyday....

peace out.... ill update more later........

random ramblings....

im lost....

what happened to the good old simple xanga!?!?

untitled

its been nearly 18 months since ive logged onto my xanga.... and when did it get so hectic.... lost in my own profile page it took me ages to work out how to post a new entry.... maybe ive just gotten used to facebook....

as nice as it is to hook up with old friends on facebook i still prefer to come back here......

timeless......

time is like money.....

it always feels like i never have enough time....

you know how it always seems like you never have enough money.... you can't help but to think if you had a little more things would be sweet..... but some how no matter how much you make.... your spending matches your earning.... and you think if only i had so and so more..... when you have  a thousand you want 2... if make 5 you want 7..... and so on.... its seems we always make a little less than what we want....

i thnk the same goes with time.... you sort of always want a little bit more....

if only i had more time....

but i realise its all relative....

you use your time according to how much you have..... so your always sort of busy....

take studying for example... if you have 4 subjects and you decrease your load down to 2....... you still find yourself just as busy..... just as pressed to get work done..... its not like you have twice as much time because you do half the amount of subjects....

yeh its easier....... but i find that in terms of time.... your still short.......

it seems when i take less on to free up time.... its not reflected in the quality of the things that i continue to do......

ie taking on 2 subjects instead of 4.... its not like the quality of an assignment is twice as good because i had half the work load....

Ethics?

just something useless to think about.......

you ever wonder on what we base our morals and our ethics?

what governs what we ought to do?

is this negotiable? can we rationalise unethical or immoral behaviour?

should there be a universal ethical standard that everyone must follow?

like what makes you stop at a red light?

if you are driving along... and you come to red light.... what do you do?........ stop...... well i hope you do.....

but what is it that makes us stop?..... well its the law i hear you saying.....

we ought to stop because its the law.....

well what would you do... if the light was red...... and no one was around?

would you go?..... no?..... what if it was absolutely deserted...... 2am in the morning....... and the light was red for 15 minutes and its not changing....... 20 minutes...... 30 minutes......

would you go?

maybe yes?....... but then aren't we breaking the law....

is our moral and ethical basis negotiable? relative? conditional? is there times when its "ok" to break the law?

our answer before, that we stop "because its the law...." doesnt that apply anymore?

or what if you were walking along and you find a wallet.... its got some ID... cards.... money........

what do you do? what ought we do? keep it? ........ return it?...... i hope you do.......

why? why do we feel we ought to return it? is it against the law not to return the wallet? not really...... then why would anyone return it?

we all know the hassle of losing a wallet....... the futile search..... cancelling cards...... getting your license etc again...... its not fun......

so i think most would return it....... simply because thats what we would like someone to do us...... if we lost our wallets....

sort of like a do unto others.... as you would have them do to you thingy.....

but what if the wallet you found....... was scraggly........ one of those old billabong ones.... no important ID...... no money...... just a libray card and some contact details written on a piece of paper......

would you return it? maybe not....... if they lived on the other side of town, would you think its worth it? to go the trouble of returning it? maybe not?

why? because the monetary value of the wallet is less?

do we always bend our moral and ethical values to suit us?... pick and choose how we see fit to apply our moral and ethical standings....

which is a worry..... because who decides? who benefits? i mean everyone is different.....

is ethics situational? cultural? rational? negotiable? is it ok to compromise?

i think ill look into it........

a garden shed with pad-see-eww on the side.....

 wassabi....

wow so its been a while since ive updated my xanga..... with everyone using facebook...... xanga seems so quiet...

anyways

i finally got those bedsheets on.... yay!!

Picture 130

im quite proud of the matching cushion i got.... as you can see we have a dark pink feature wall with light pink walls..

its not as girly as u think...

Picture 129 Picture 122

i think our french-antique-chateau bed looks quite cosy....

also in an effort to do a bit of budget money saving and use up left over ingredients from wol-nam-sum, we decided to try and make our own pad-see-eww (jane's favourtie dish at west ryde thai.... not that its expensive hey? but every little bit counts....)

heres the result

p1 p2 p3

not bad for a first effort i think....

we must try chicken penang in the future.....

also with useless boxes and junk lying around our house and very little storage we decided that we need a shed....

he have heaps of fishing gear and other random stuff that needs to be out of sight and out of mind....

there was an old brick bbq in the corner of our yard.... jane attacked it one day with a sledge hammer and broke it down....

all thats left was a concrete slab

we decided to use some of this concrete as a the foundation....

we had to dig next the concrete slab in order to fill it with bricks because our shed was going to be twice the size of the existing conrete slab...

s1 s2 s3 s4

not bad for a half days work?

the four walls were erected on a raised conrete ledge to minimise water entering and to get the correct level as the slab/land is on a slight slant....

we got the four walls... drilled holes and through connecting pannels and riveted the pannels together....

then the main beam was put along the top of the shed with the roofing sheets following....

sheridan and my 400D

 Sheridan

i don't know what it is about the married life but it slowly creeps up on you and changes you...

one of the things i have noticed is my new liking of bed sheets..... previously it had been whatever my mum bought.....

but now its different.... its a whole new world....

its seriously addictive...  i think we have 5 or 6 complete sets of bed linen..... and everytime we go into myer or look at catalogues we think thats nice..... and we want to get more..... how greedy!!

i would have to say atm, my favourite brand is sheridan.... their designs match the theme and style of our bed, and the colours match our room.... our room is light pink with a heavy pink feature wall....its not really as pink as it sounds and surprisingly it looks really nice in my opinion.....

the sheridan sheets arent that soft in terms of texture.... they dont feel that great until u hit something like the 600+ count cotton sheets...but thats a different price range altogether.....

isnt it wonderful that God has blessed us with a sense of touch... that we are able to experience all these different textures.....

i felt some sheets with like 1000 cotton count..... pure luxury....... anyways

the ones we got are no where near there but what they lack in softness....

they make up for in terms of quality.... the sheets are thick and a lot of care and attention has been taken in terms of workmanship.... its a good all round bed linen set.....

in terms of practicality sheridan scores top points.....

i dont know if it justifies the price.... but at the end of it all,

all that matters is that we are happy....

even our pillows are sheridan....

its time for our sheets to be changed this week so i think we will change to this one....

its the sheridan signature range, damask in vanilla....

some awesome friends got it for us as a wedding gift....

Anyways the bed in the pic is not our actual bed..... i think ours is nicer....

i love coming home after a long day... and just crashing on our bed.... i love it so much.... it like our own little sanctuary...

our mattress was this this hectic chiro/posture correcting bed with DOUBLE pillow tops! yeh baby! its like heaven.... when we were shopping for matresses we must have litterally checked out about a hundred different beds...

on all the ones we lay down on..... when we lay down on this bed....we just looked at each other and said this is the one we are going to get....

that what was the deciding factor.... when youve seen a couple of the mattresses available, youve seen them all.... its hard to choose.... according to the manufactorers specs theyre good in their own special ways.......

so we said the one we lie down on and you instantly fall in love with it.... thats the one we will get.....

at the end of the day.... im scared of what i have become....

..... btw.... myer is having a sale.... anyone want to go linen shopping???

CANON EOS 400D DIGITAL SLR CAMERA

back in november last year jane bought me the canon 400d digital SLR camera.... with the twin lens kit, yeah baby!!  im not that good at using it yet so i cant take great pictures...... yet....

but now that i do have this camera ill take a nice pic of our bed with the new sheets and post it up soon.....

this is what the camera looks like..... i wanted something different so i got the silver body... (also that fact that most of sydney was sold out of blac bodys was a contributing factor)

there are so many functions and settings i dont know where to begin....

here's a pic i took of jane on our honeymoon...

it was at an island stopover for lunch on our way to turtle island where we were going to watch turtles lay eggs... but that story is for another day....

this is the warf that doesnt end... it goes on and on my friend.... some people started walking not knowing what it was.... la la la...

here is an overexposed shot of me.....

and one of jane chilling in the back of our speed boat....

more photos of our honeymoon later....

l'amour.... dog poo & paris.....

 the proposal...

it was freezing when we landed...

Charles de Gaulle Airport was supposed to be Europes second busiest airport but it was dead quiet when we arrived....

Paris was not what i expected....  aka the city of love.... a place were romance blooms... C'est La Vie....no?                                  no...... it was cold.... it was grey.... and there was dog poo everywhere...

but....cold grey and pooey.....  i had been planning this for the longest time and so we had to stick to agenda.... rain, hail or snow.....

jane at this stage still has no idea.....

we made good use of the RER... man the train aint cheap in paris..

pic 037

my favourite station....

the train system is hectic!

it made me redefine what i perceive as cold.... or freezing..... especially after spending about 8 weeks in africa... most of that time in the desert...

luckily enough the weather was clear! the sun was out.... and it was a beautiful day..... but dont let the photos deceive you.... it was freezing... something like minus 5... it was so cold it felt like my face was peeling.... so cold that if you spat, your saliva would form into an icicle before it hit the ground......

if you were speaking to someone that spits and splutters when they speak it would have been dangerous... before u could say "say it dont spray it"... you would get attacked by a barrage of tiny spit darts... frozen little ice arrows....

first on our agenda was a cityrama bus tour... its the quickest and easiest way to see the city and you get to visit all the cool places like the Opera, Champs Elysées, Arch of Triumph, Eiffel tower, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame cathedral and list of other exciting touristy places.....

we pretty much had the whole bus to ourselves so we sat up top which was cool, the windows went all the way around and the roof of the bus was made of glass too...

after this we had a short break and took a walk around Paris visiting shops and souvenir stores.... there were so many yummy places to eat.... we couldn't resist this guy selling crepes on the street.... unbelievably good.....

Notre dame was one of the places we had to check out so we spent some time there too.....

the stained-glass windows were hectic.... the photos dont do them justice....

by this time.... it was dark.....

it was off to the eiffel tower.....

we had a dinner reservation at altitude 95, called that because its actually in the eiffel tower 95 metres up in the air.....

we had a 3 course meal and the view was excellent!

the amazing thing was just opposite the restaurant there was an ice-rink!

jane at this point.... still has no idea.....

next we make our way down the siene river were there is a boat waiting for us to take us on a river cruise.... at night Paris becomes the "city of lights" and all the famous brigdes of Paris light up and we cruise under them.....

after the cruise we get dropped off at the Eiffel Tower....

i tell jane theres one more thing to see.... and so i take her over to this garden area just under the eiffel tower....

i ask her to sit on one of park benches.... looking at my watch i tell her its almost time... that in a few moments something special will happen.... i hint it may have to do with the eiffel tower... i think jane is expecting some light show or something as it lights up every 10 or so minutes....

i ask her to close her eyes...

she still has no idea....

im so~~~~~ nervous at this stage..... my heart is racing and my palms are all sweaty as i reach into my pocket to get the ring...

i get down on one knee and i take a deep breath of the cold paris air.....

and i tell her to open her eyes...

at first she sorta doesnt see me because she's looking up at the eiffel tower and then she realises what is going on.....

i mumble out some words that i cant really remember.....(its for jane to know and no one to find out...)

im so nervous i cant get my words right....

the important thing is ...... she says.... yes....

this old couple walk by a few minutes later.... we ask them to take a picture for us... hehehe..... i dont think they knew what was going on with the digital camera....

this is the photo... our first pic as an engaged couple...

and there u have it...

jane was now.... my fiancee.....

why did i go to all this trouble and propose in paris?....

because she's worth it....
